How to figure out the quantity of fabric needed
Example: Your window measures 57’’ wide and 45’’ high. You would like to make curtains with French pleats (scale = 3x) covering the framing of the window and going down to 1’’ of the ground, so : 65’’ x 82’’. The curtains will have 2 panels opening in the middle. The fabric that you have chosen is 54’’ wide and you will use a 4’’ wide gathering tape.

Width to cover X scale = Length of fabric required at the top.

65’’ X 3 = 195’’

Length of fabric at the top / width of the fabric = number of panel (rounded)

195’’ divided by 54’’ = 3.61 panels = 4 panels

To determine the length of each panel:

Total height to cover + top hem (see below) + bottom hem (see below) = length of the panel

82’’ + 2’’ + 7’’ = 91’’

4 lengths of 91’’ = 364’’ = you will need 10.1 yards (or 9.35 meters) of fabric to cover this window.

Warning: If your fabric contains a print or texture that repeats itself and that you need to match, you will have to figure more fabric.

Thus, you will first need to measure the repeat of the pattern. Then, divide the length of the panel by the measurement of your repeat. This will give you the number of repeats needed per length of fabric.

Ex: repeat measures 12’’

91’’ (length per panel) / 12’’ (repeat) = 7.58 repeats = 8 repeats (rounded)

Number of repeats X height of the repeat = length of fabric per panel X number of panels = total quantity of fabric needed

8 repeats X 12’’ = 96’’ X 4 panels = 384’’ = 10.7 yards (or 9.85 meters) for the same window with a matching pattern.

Top hem curtains:

Rod pocket: 2 X the measurement of the frieze + the measurement of the pocket. Ex: frieze of 2’’ + pocket of 2’’ = an additional 8’’ is required.

Gathering Tape: sheer or semi-transparent fabric: 2 X the width of the tape + seam allowance.
Opaque fabric: 2 X seam allowance.
French pleats in sheer or semi-transparent fabric: 2 X the width of the interfacing.
Opaque fabric: 1 X the width of the interfacing + seam allowance.

Bottom hem:

Total height to cover Sheer or semi-transparent fabric Opaque fabric
78 to 96in 2 X 6in = 12in 6in + seam allowance
59 to 77in 2 X 5in = 10in 5in + seam allowance
39 to 58in 2 X 4in = 8in 4in + seam allowance

Tabs : 10 inches of fabric in 60’’ wide to cut 8 to 10 tabs.

For a non-lined curtain, you must add 6 inches of fabric for the facing.
