Quilting keeps renewing itself over time and is quickly regaining its popularity with seamstresses. New patterns, mainly geometric, are present and the technique stays the same throughout the different styles. Whether it’s in a blanket, wall decor, placemats or cushions, quilting always finds a way to integrate itself into our decorations. Choose the pattern and colours of your choice. For this tutorial, we used the Batik cotton, if you want to learn more about this unique type of fabric click here.
Level of difficulty: Intermediate. Basic sewing machine skills
Time required: About 3 hours
- 12 fat quarter
- Cotton: 50 cm (20 inches)
- 1 cushion form 20” x 20”
- Rotary knife or scissors
- Fabric pencil
- Tape measure
STEP 1: Cut 2 pieces of 6.4 cm x 55.4 cm (2.5” x 22”) to get your fat quarter. Divide the 2 pieces previously cut into 2. Cut your 12 pieces that will be used for the left side at an angle of 45 degrees starting from the right corner. For your pieces on the right side, cut at an angle of 45 degrees starting from the left corner.
STEP 2: Place the left-hand pieces on top of each other, shifting to a 45-degree angle. Pin and sew ¼ “seam.
STEP 3: Lay your work flat and iron your seams.
STEP 4: Repeat steps 2 and 3 with the pieces for the right-hand side. Place the right and left side together by juxtaposing them, with their right side facing each other. Pin, sews and iron.
STEP 5: When your different cotton pieces now form one large piece, using your fabric pencil, draw a 20” x 20” square that will form your cushion shape. Cut.
STEP 6: Place both sides together by juxtaposing them, with their right side facing each other, pin square and join chevron. Sew your cushion, by leaving an opening to insert the cushion. Turn your fabric inside-out and place your cushion shape inside. Close the opening with a seam.
